Introducing Billy Owl: Life as a Burrowing Owl

Burrowing owls have an undeniable charm that captivates the casual observer as well as the dedicated researcher.  And since humor has always been a great way to spark engagement and deliver a message, I thought a burrowing owl comic strip was well overdue.

In this monthly comic strip I’ll use levity, and perhaps a few tears, to rally support for this imperiled species, which has a variety of common names such as Billy Owl, Ground Owl, Long-legged Owl, Prairie Owl, and Prairie Dog Owl. So with a self-imposed decree to keep this introduction brief (this is a comic strip for crying out loud), and without further ado, I’m releasing the inaugural Billy Owl comic strip unto the public and I look forward to sharing burrowing owl anecdotes with everyone.

Enjoy!

I first encountered Burrowing Owls while studying coast horned lizards with a professor in the central valley of California. They have so much personality! I’ll have to track some down!

My dad used to say, “It’s colder than Billy Owl!” when it was cold weather. Any idea where that came from. He was born and raised in southern California; born in 1927.
