We monitor burrowing owls and their wintering and breeding habitat in and adjacent to urban and suburban communities. Through our Burrow Watch program, development projects, open spaces and unintentional reserves are routinely monitored to ensure proper and innovative conservation solutions are implemented, adherence to state and federal wildlife laws, and to champion preservation of habitat within our communities that is accessible to both people and wildlife. We continually locate development activities and identify those projects that pose a concern for burrowing owls.
We visit project areas and perform burrowing owl site surveys – documenting numbers, active burrows and habitat conditions.
We meet with city and county departments to review Environmental Impact Reports and work for the protection of burrowing owls.
We watchdog development projects to ensure adherence to state and federal laws and the protection of special status species.
When necessary, we generate media coverage to highlight the adverse impacts projects will have on burrowing owls and local habitat.
We rely on volunteers and members of the community to help us monitor, identify and locate burrowing owls and project sites.
For conservation to last, we NEED to restore our connection and accessibility to birds and open space in urban and suburban communities.
