Communities of Action

Working Together in our Communities

Urban_Bird_CoACreating sustainable bird populations, communities and economies are full of challenges. It’s a social task that is not meant to be tackled alone. The Communities of Action program connects leaders to one another so they can share bird conservation ideas, foster innovation in green space preservation and development, properly manage systems of unintentional reserves for birds, wildlife and people in urban areas, and create results. This program brings together professionals spanning public and private sectors, nonprofit organizations, and other experts with on-the-ground-experience to shape and advance novel and science-based solutions that are beneficial for bird populations, human health and economics.

Urban_Bird_CoA_1The Communities of Action program facilitates information sharing and sustainability model development through meetings and conferences, production of resources, best-practices materials, and through an e-newsletter that lets members know where urban preserve and unintentional reserve models are being managed, created and implemented. Building this awareness among members accomplishes three goals:

  1. Connect: Communities of Action program is a catalyst for participants to become aware of sustainability initiatives, which link urban bird and green space conservation, across the country. Connecting with like-minded municipalities, nonprofit organizations, universities, companies and agencies, members can find collaborative opportunities and share data, stories and experiences;
  2. Cooperate: Through collaborations and sharing, members can identify successful models and programs, and create best practices resources to be replicated across the country. Using a foundation of birds, people and economy, the Communities of Action program is designed to highlight innovative ideas and working models, as well as learn from less successful projects. Through collective sharing, members gain new information that would otherwise be impossible for any one group to accomplish and promote on their own; and
  3. Change: Leveraging partnerships and establishing working models provides ample opportunities for achieving sustainable urban and suburban bird conservation tactics — nationwide strategies that also have enumerable health, economic and community benefits. The Communities of Action platform drives local, regional and large-scale impacts and results in positive changes on both policies and practices in the public and private sectors.
