AMERICAN CANYON, CA, November 1, 2018 – Scott Artis, Executive Director of Urban Bird Foundation, has been appointed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to serve on the Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council (SAC) for a three-year term.

SAC consists of representatives of conservation non-government organizations, scientific and educational institutions, and commercial, recreational, and community groups interested in the protection and multiple use management of sanctuary resources. SAC advises the sanctuary superintendent on the Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary’s management and protection while serving as a liaison between constituent communities and sanctuary staff. SAC was established to identify issues and concerns within the community while playing a particularly important role regarding changes, feedback and updates to management plans and the review process.

“I am honored to be appointed to the Conservation seat on the Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council,” says, Artis. “I hope that my experiences in the adjacent communities and conserving coastal and marine ecosystems will help protect the Sanctuary’s incredible wildlife and resources. This is an opportunity to have a positive, lasting impact on species spanning birds to whales while promoting public awareness of conservation issues in the Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary.”

Artis has research and conservation experience in micro, molecular and cellular biology, raptor, fisheries and wildlife science, and has worked in coastal, marine and urban ecosystems. He is the founder of Burrowing Owl Conservation Network and currently serves as executive director of Urban Bird Foundation and managing director of Turtle Island Restoration Network.
