Sponsor an artificial burrow (for burrowing owls)
Your sponsorship helps fund the building and installation of an artificial burrow that a Western burrowing owl family needs to survive. Because Western burrowing owls do not dig their own burrows, artificial burrows are used as an emergency measure when habitat is lost to development or until their habitat can be restored through the return of burrowing digging mammals. Burrowing owls need a burrow year-round.
Urban Bird Foundation uses artificial burrows (buried underground to simulate a natural burrow) as a band aid until we are able to restore a functional ecosystem in urban and suburban open spaces and grasslands. Often, burrowing owl habitat is destroyed or may be rendered unsuitable for burrowing owls when, for example, ground squirrels are removed by people or invasive plants grow to tall. In a proper functioning ecosystem, ground digging mammals will dig the necessary burrows for Western burrowing owls.
